Read: 1st John 4:7-11

This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12

When asked, “What’s the best advice a pastoral or other counselor might give to a woman in her prime who faces devastating health problems,” a Lutheran Bishop replied, “She should have been an active member of a vital congregation for the previous twenty years.” That’s good advice.

In 1995 premature twin sisters were placed in separate incubators. Kyrie thrived while Brielle developed complications. A wise nurse put the babies together and once Brielle snuggled close, her vital signs improved and she fell asleep. The picture that captured the world’s attention showed Kyrie’s tiny arm wrapped around Brielle’s shoulders as they slept — proof that there’s nothing like a sister’s hug to make you feel better.

Studies show that people who are part of a community — whether family, church, special group or club, etc. — heal faster than those who prefer to go it alone. Our father often encouraged people who were hurting to volunteer at a local nursing home or hospital, or visit with shut-ins because 1) it gets you out of yourself; and 2) it makes someone else’s day a little brighter. And if you do it in the name of Jesus Christ, all the better.

Jesus promises He’ll never leave us. He holds us close to His heart, and He’s given us His Comforter (John 14:16) to abide with us forever. We’re all in this together, so let’s share His love and comfort one another (1st Thessalonians 5:11).

Consider yourself {hugged} by an active member of a vital congregation.
